National Running Day – A Day for Reflection and Thankfulness

It’s National Running Day and for me it is a day to Reflect on what running means to me and how it has shaped me, especially in my later years, and being Thankful that I can run!!

It seemed right that today was my first day back to running after a 2 week hiatus due to the flu and exhaustion. I ran 2.25 miles @ 8:33 pace. It was short but nice to get back out there. I didn’t want to overdo it plus it was crucially hot and humid.

Looking back to my very first run I remember it being a day that I was able to share something with my Dad that wasn’t soley based on school or work. It was something more, it was about achieving something just for me and pushing myself to do something I didn’t think was possible.
My Dad was a Marine and it goes without saying that he was a very diligent, strict, and hard working person. Most things weren’t done because they made you happy but because it was just what you were suppose to do or had to do. There were only a few things in life I found that he did because it actually made him genuinely happy, Running was one of them and Camping/Hiking/Backpacking was another. He didn’t have to do them but he truly loved doing those things and it didn’t require “work” and deadlines.

I am happy to say that I did inherit both of those loves from my Dad and can’t imagine a better gift!
Running is a pure sense of calm for me as well as a motivating and driving force in my life. Being in nature only enhances that and I have to say that Trail Running {although I don’t get to do much of it} is one of the best ways to experience Nature and Running together.

I am truly Thankful to my Dad for introducing me to running and nature as well as hiking/trail running/backpacking.

I run not only for me but with my Dad every time I lace up my shoes and hit the ground!

As I have grown up I have been fortunate enough to find a husband who also loves nature and that we can enjoy that together. I have also been fortunate enough to live around friends who love Running as much as I do and help to push me to achieve my goals.

What did you do to celebrate National Running Day?

How has running shaped your life?

I’m so glad you have running as a way to be with and to honor your dad. He shared a special gift with you and now you get to pass that on to other people and inspire them. Happy National Running Day, Lacy. :)
